IELTS Task 1 Academic Overview Sentences

Write accurate overview statements that capture key chart trends.

The overview is the most important sentence in an IELTS Task 1 Academic response. It summarises the main trend or dominant feature of the data without quoting specific numbers. Missing or weak overviews are the leading cause of Band 5 Task Achievement scores in Task 1.

Examples

Weak

AvoidThe graph shows data about internet usage in five countries between 2000 and 2020. There are many different numbers in the graph.

Stronger

BetterOverall, internet usage rose significantly in all five countries over the period, with South Korea showing the steepest growth and France the most modest.

The strong overview identifies the dominant trend (all rose), notes a key comparison (steepest vs most modest), and uses no specific figures. It could be written before looking at the numbers in detail.

How It Works

What an overview must do

  • Identify the main trend or dominant feature (not every detail).
  • Make a comparison if one is obvious (highest, lowest, fastest).
  • Use no specific numbers — those belong in the detail paragraphs.
  • Appear at the end of the introduction or as a separate short paragraph.

Apply to every chart type

  • Line graphs: identify the overall direction and any outlier.
  • Bar/pie charts: identify the largest and smallest category.
  • Tables: identify the highest total and the most striking difference.
  • Process diagrams: identify the number of stages and the start/end state.

Overview starters

Overall, [main trend], with [key comparison].
In general, [dominant feature], although [notable exception].
It is clear that [main trend] throughout the period.

Quick rules

  • Write the overview before the detail paragraphs, not as a conclusion.
  • No numbers in the overview — save them for the body.
  • Two sentences maximum; one is often enough.

Common Mistakes

Overview with specific numbers

Avoid"Overall, internet usage in South Korea rose from 20% to 95% between 2000 and 2020."

Better"Overall, internet usage rose dramatically in all countries, with South Korea recording the largest increase."

Fix: Remove specific figures from the overview; describe direction and scale instead.

Describing the chart rather than the data

Avoid"The bar chart shows information about five countries using different coloured bars."

Better"Overall, energy consumption per capita was highest in North America and lowest in Africa across all years shown."

Fix: Describe what the data shows, not what the chart looks like.

Overall, car ownership increased in most countries over the decade.

In 2010, Germany had 500 cars per 1000 people.

In general, renewable energy accounted for the smallest share of production throughout.

The table shows six countries and four types of energy from 2000 to 2020.

Why It Matters

IELTS Academic Task 1 awards a full 25% of marks to Task Achievement, and the band descriptors explicitly require a clear overview of main trends. Without one, Band 7 is unreachable regardless of grammar quality. Writing the overview is a 30-second habit that protects your score.
