IELTS Writing Task 2 Structure

📅 March 14, 2026 ✍️ IELTS Corner Team ⏱️ 7 min read

Many IELTS essays stay stuck around Band 6 because the structure is unstable. Students add random ideas, overuse linking words, or write paragraphs that do not really support the position. A strong IELTS Writing Task 2 score starts with a predictable essay shape.

The 4-paragraph structure that works

Introduction: paraphrase the question and state your position.

Body 1: first main reason, then explanation and example.

Body 2: second main reason, then explanation and example.

Conclusion: restate your position without adding a new idea.

What each paragraph should do

Introduction: Do not write a long background story. Your job is to set up the topic and make your position clear.

Body paragraphs: Each body paragraph needs one central idea. If two unrelated reasons appear in the same paragraph, cohesion drops.

Conclusion: Keep it short. Summarize the position and main logic. Do not introduce a new example here.

Sample template

Introduction: While some people believe X, I believe Y because reason 1 and reason 2.

Body 1: First, reason 1. Explain why it matters. Add one specific example.

Body 2: Second, reason 2. Explain it clearly. Add one relevant example.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I believe Y because of reason 1 and reason 2.

Timing for IELTS Writing Task 2

  • 2-3 minutes: decide your position and outline two body ideas.
  • 30-32 minutes: write the full essay.
  • 5 minutes: check grammar, spelling, punctuation, and repetition.

Common structure mistakes

Mistake Fix
Unclear opinion in introduction State the position directly in one sentence.
Three or four reasons in one body paragraph Limit each paragraph to one core reason.
Conclusion adds a fresh argument Only summarize what you already proved.
Linking words everywhere Use transitions when meaning changes, not in every sentence.

What Band 7 essays usually do better

Band 7 essays are not magical. They usually have a clearer position, stronger paragraph unity, and fewer moments where the reader has to guess why a sentence is there. That is why structure matters so much.
