A discussion essay asks you to present both views fairly and then give your own opinion. The most common mistake is treating it like two separate opinion essays — one for each side — with no personal position at the end. The examiner needs to know where you stand.
Examples
Weak
AvoidSome people think technology is good for education. Other people think it is bad. There are many arguments on both sides. In my opinion both views have good points.
Stronger
BetterAdvocates of educational technology argue that digital tools give students access to resources once limited to elite institutions. Critics counter that screen dependence shortens concentration spans. On balance, I believe the access benefits outweigh the risks, provided schools set clear usage limits.
The strong version presents each view in one precise sentence, uses contrast signposting, and ends with a conditional opinion — showing nuance rather than fence-sitting.
How It Works
Structure
Introduction: paraphrase + signal that you will discuss both views + state your position.
Body 1: View A — strongest argument + one example.
Body 2: View B — strongest argument + one example.
Conclusion: weigh the two views, restate your opinion.
When to use this
- Question says "Discuss both views and give your own opinion."
- Two clear positions are presented in the question prompt.
Key phrases
Quick rules
- Give each view roughly equal space — one body paragraph each.
- Use reporting verbs (argue, contend, suggest) to distance yourself from View A or B.
- Your own opinion must appear — "both have merit" is not an opinion.
Common Mistakes
No personal opinion
Avoid"Both sides have valid points and society must decide."
Better"On balance, I believe stricter regulation is necessary despite the cost to industry."
Fix: Choose a side and state it clearly in the conclusion.
Using "I" to present View A or B
Avoid"I think technology is good because students learn faster."
Better"Advocates argue that technology accelerates learning through instant feedback."
Fix: Use reporting verbs for the views; keep "I" for your own conclusion.

Supporters argue that renewable energy creates long-term jobs.
I believe renewable energy is the only solution.
Critics suggest that the transition cost is too high for developing nations.
On balance, I think the benefits outweigh the costs.
Why It Matters
IELTS Task 2 discussion essays are marked on whether you address all parts of the task. If you omit your own opinion, you cap Task Achievement at Band 5. If you fail to present both views fairly, you lose marks on Coherence and Cohesion. This structure ensures both criteria are met.
