CELPIP Speaking Task 7 Opinion Depth Strategy

Develop opinion answers with clear reasons and balanced ideas.

CELPIP Speaking Task 7 asks for your opinion on a topic with some personal or societal relevance. CLB 9 responses give a clear position, one developed reason, and a concrete example or evidence. Surface-level opinions with no development score below CLB 8.

Examples

Weak

Avoid"I think it is a good idea because it has a lot of benefits and can help many people in different ways."

Stronger

Better"I strongly support flexible work arrangements because they measurably reduce employee burnout. In a 2023 survey of Canadian tech workers, those with flexible hours reported 30% lower rates of stress-related absences compared to those on fixed schedules. That outcome alone makes the policy worth implementing."

How It Works

Position in sentence 1

State your opinion before giving any reasons

"I firmly believe that mandatory language training benefits immigrant workers more than voluntary programs."

One developed reason

Give one reason with an explanation, not three bare reasons

"The primary reason is that mandatory enrollment removes the stigma associated with self-identifying as a language learner."

Concrete example

Add a specific example, statistic, or personal experience

"In my own workplace, a colleague who completed a mandatory onboarding program was more willing to ask for clarification than those who self-enrolled."

Closing restatement

Restate your position in one sentence at the end

"For these reasons, I believe mandatory programs produce stronger long-term outcomes than optional ones."

Common Mistakes

Three reasons, no depth

AvoidIt is good because it saves time, money, and helps people.

BetterThe primary reason I support this is the time saved: a 30-minute daily commute eliminated over a year saves approximately 130 hours -- equivalent to more than three full work weeks.

Fix: Pick one reason and develop it fully rather than listing three reasons at surface level.

No example

AvoidIt has many benefits for people in many different situations.

BetterFor example, a nurse who works 12-hour shifts benefits more from flexible start times than from a salary increase, according to retention data from Ontario hospitals.

Fix: Every opinion benefit from a concrete example. Use "for example", "in my experience", or a specific data point.

Weak position signal

AvoidI think maybe it could be a good idea.

BetterI strongly support this policy for one specific reason.

Fix: Remove "maybe" from your position statement. Confidence in your stated opinion is scored under Task Fulfilment.

Practice Lab

2. Build it

Tap a chunk to move it between the bank and answer area.

3. Sort it

Sort each item into the correct category.

State your position in the first sentence without hedging.

List three benefits without developing any of them.

Support your reason with a specific example or data point.

Use "maybe" or "I think possibly" in your position statement.

Why It Matters

CELPIP Speaking Task 7 assesses depth of reasoning, not breadth of reasons. Candidates who list three or four benefits at surface level rarely score above CLB 8 on Coherence and Cohesion because there is no development chain to follow. One position, one developed reason with an explanation, and one concrete example is the CLB 9 structure -- and it takes approximately 45-55 seconds, which fits naturally within the task time.
