CELPIP Speaking Task 1 Advice Structure

Deliver organized advice with clear sequencing and useful language.

CELPIP Speaking Task 1 asks you to give advice to a friend. High-scoring responses give one clear recommendation, one concrete reason, and one practical next step. Vague advice and over-qualification drop the Coherence score.

Examples

Weak

Avoid"Well, I think maybe you could try to look for a job or maybe talk to someone about your situation and see what happens."

Stronger

Better"My advice is to speak with your manager directly this week. In my experience, most scheduling conflicts are resolved in a single five-minute conversation, and waiting only makes the situation worse."

How It Works

Clear recommendation

State the advice in the first sentence, not the third

"I would recommend applying for the position before the Friday deadline."

One strong reason

Give one specific reason rather than a list of vague ones

"The main reason is that early applicants receive priority screening in most companies."

Practical next step

Tell them exactly what to do and when

"Tonight, update your CV and send it to the HR email listed on the posting."

Confident tone

Avoid "maybe", "possibly", "I am not sure but"

"I would definitely speak to your landlord before involving the rental authority."

Common Mistakes

Delayed recommendation

AvoidThere are many things to consider in this situation. First you should think about your options...

BetterI would recommend speaking with your supervisor directly.

Fix: State the recommendation in the first sentence. Task 1 is 30-40 seconds. Delay wastes your response time.

Multiple vague options

AvoidYou could try option A or maybe option B or possibly option C.

BetterI suggest option A because it directly addresses the core issue.

Fix: Pick one option and defend it. Listing options without commitment sounds uncertain.

Over-hedging

AvoidI am not completely sure, but maybe you could possibly consider...

BetterI would suggest applying early.

Fix: Remove "maybe", "possibly", and "I am not sure". Confident phrasing scores higher on Task Fulfilment.

Practice Lab

Self-mark each task. Retry until every answer is correct.

Score: 0/3

1. Quick pick

Which option best demonstrates this skill?

2. Build it

Put the sentence in the correct order.

Tap a chunk to move it between the bank and answer area.

3. Sort it

Sort each item into the correct category.

State your recommendation in the first sentence.

List three possible options without recommending one.

Give one specific reason your advice will solve the problem.

Use "maybe" and "possibly" to soften every suggestion.

Why It Matters

CELPIP Speaking Task 1 is scored on Task Fulfilment, Coherence and Cohesion, and Vocabulary and Grammar. A response that gives a clear recommendation in the first sentence, supports it with one specific reason, and closes with a practical next step achieves the Task Fulfilment requirement efficiently and leaves speaking time for elaboration rather than preamble.
