Upgrading vocabulary in CELPIP Writing is not about using longer words. It is about replacing vague, overused words with precise, contextually accurate alternatives. This lesson targets the upgrades that most reliably move a response from CLB 8 to CLB 9.
Examples
Weak
Avoid"The thing about this issue is that it is very bad and affects many people in a big way."
Stronger
Better"The core challenge is that inadequate public transit disproportionately affects low-income commuters."
How It Works
Replace "very + adjective"
Use a stronger single adjective instead
"very tired" → "exhausted"; "very important" → "critical"
Replace "get/got"
Use a precise verb that shows how or why
"got a promotion" → "earned a promotion"; "got worse" → "deteriorated"
Replace "thing/issue/problem"
Name the specific noun
"the main issue" → "the key barrier"; "the thing is" → "the core challenge is"
Replace "big/small"
Use a measurable or context-specific adjective
"a big difference" → "a significant difference"; "small amount" → "minimal uptake"
Common Mistakes
Vague intensifier
AvoidThis is a very serious and very important problem.
BetterThis is a critical, wide-reaching problem.
Fix: Stack two precise adjectives instead of repeating "very".
Overused verb
AvoidWe got a lot of useful feedback from the survey.
BetterWe gathered substantial feedback through the survey.
Fix: "Gathered" signals intentional collection; "substantial" replaces "a lot of".
Vague noun
AvoidThere are many things that need to change about this policy.
BetterSeveral provisions in this policy require amendment.
Fix: Name the specific noun (provisions) and use a formal verb (require amendment).

Why It Matters
CELPIP Vocabulary Range at CLB 9 rewards candidates who use precise, context-appropriate language. The most accessible upgrade path is not learning obscure words -- it is replacing the ten most overused vague words in your writing (very, thing, get, big, good, bad, nice, a lot, important, problem) with accurate alternatives you already know but are not yet deploying in exam conditions.
