Tone is the register you adopt in writing — formal, semi-formal, or informal. CELPIP Task 1 situations signal the required tone through context clues: who you are writing to and what the situation is. Mismatching tone to context is one of the most common CLB 7-8 errors.
Examples
Weak
AvoidWriting to a landlord: "Hey, the sink is broken. Fix it ASAP."
Stronger
BetterWriting to a landlord: "Dear Mr. Okafor, I am writing to report a plumbing issue in Unit 2C. The kitchen sink has been blocked since Monday, March 18th. Could you please arrange for a repair at your earliest convenience? I am available on weekday mornings if access is required."
The strong version uses: formal salutation, passive/polite constructions (I am writing to report, could you please), a specific timeframe, and an offer to facilitate.
How It Works
Tone signals in the prompt
- Formal: landlord, employer, government office, bank, service provider.
- Semi-formal: neighbour, local community group, acquaintance.
- Informal: friend, family member — rarely appears in CELPIP Task 1.
Formal vs semi-formal markers
- Formal: "I am writing to," "Could you please," "I would appreciate," "Yours sincerely."
- Semi-formal: "I wanted to let you know," "Thanks for," "Looking forward to hearing from you."
- Informal (avoid in Task 1): "Hey," "ASAP," contractions in formal contexts, exclamation marks.
Tone upgrade pairs
Quick rules
- Read the prompt carefully — who is the recipient?
- When in doubt, use formal over semi-formal — it is safer.
- Contractions (I'm, it's) are acceptable in semi-formal; avoid them in formal contexts.
Common Mistakes
Informal to formal recipient
Avoid"Hey boss, I can't come in tomorrow. I'm sick. Bye."
Better"Dear Ms. Rodriguez, I am writing to inform you that I will be unable to attend work on March 22nd due to illness. I will ensure all pending tasks are covered before my return."
Fix: Identify the recipient's authority level first. Any professional or institutional recipient = formal register.
Request without politeness markers
Avoid"Send me a replacement item."
Better"Could you please arrange for a replacement item to be sent to my address at your earliest convenience?"
Fix: All requests need "could you please," "would it be possible," or "I would appreciate it if you could." Commands without these markers sound rude and score lower.

Why It Matters
CELPIP Task 1 tone control directly affects the Task Fulfilment and Vocabulary criteria. Mismatched tone (informal language to a formal recipient) signals poor sociolinguistic awareness, which caps Vocabulary at CLB 7 regardless of word choice. Matching formal constructions to formal contexts is the fastest tone upgrade available.
