Most CELPIP Reading errors happen because candidates match the topic of a question to a passage section but do not confirm the specific evidence. This lesson teaches exact keyword-to-evidence matching to eliminate guessing.
Examples
Weak
Avoid"The question mentions pricing, so I chose the paragraph about the product."
Stronger
Better"The question asks about the reason for the price increase. I found the sentence 'The increase reflects rising raw material costs, not a change in profit margin.' The answer must be raw material costs, not profit margin."
How It Works
Keyword extraction
Underline the 2-3 key content words in the question
Question: "What caused the delay in construction?" Keywords: caused, delay, construction
Scan not read
Move your eye quickly until the keyword or its synonym appears
Scan for "delay", "construction", "postpone", "halt" -- any synonym of the keyword
Evidence sentence
Find the specific sentence that contains the answer; do not paraphrase the paragraph
"Due to material shortages, the project was postponed by six months." This sentence directly answers the question.
Distractor check
Before selecting, verify the other options are not supported by this sentence
The sentence mentions "shortages" but not "budget" or "weather" -- reject those options.
Common Mistakes
Topic matching not evidence matching
AvoidThe paragraph is about pricing so I picked the pricing answer.
BetterThe paragraph mentions "raw material costs" as the cause; the answer must use that phrasing or a direct synonym.
Fix: CELPIP distractors are usually on the same topic as the correct answer. Evidence matching, not topic matching, distinguishes them.
Reading instead of scanning
AvoidI read the whole passage twice and ran out of time.
BetterI extracted three keywords from the question and scanned for any synonym in the passage.
Fix: Scanning moves three to four times faster than reading. CELPIP Reading is timed -- scanning is required, not optional.
Synonym blindness
AvoidThe question uses "postpone" but I only looked for "postpone" in the passage.
BetterThe passage uses "delayed" -- a synonym -- which answers the question about being postponed.
Fix: Prepare a mental synonym set for common exam topics: delayed/postponed/halted; cost/price/fee; require/need/necessitate.
Practice Lab
Self-mark each task. Retry until every answer is correct.
Score: 0/3
1. Quick pick
Which option best demonstrates this skill?
2. Build it
Put the sentence in the correct order.
Tap a chunk to move it between the bank and answer area.
3. Sort it
Sort each item into the correct category.
Extract 2-3 keywords from the question before touching the passage.
Read the passage in full before attempting any question.
Look for synonyms of your keywords as well as exact matches.
Pick the answer that is on the same topic as the question without finding the evidence sentence.
Why It Matters
CELPIP Reading is designed to test whether you can locate specific information quickly, not whether you can understand a passage after reading it three times. The keyword-to-evidence matching method converts a comprehension task into a targeted search task, which is both faster and more accurate. Candidates who use this approach consistently reduce their error rate on information-location questions by identifying the exact evidence sentence rather than inferring from the paragraph topic.
